In translating an article in relation the Pope's visit to Valencia, Spain this July. It takes this quote from a book by the Pope called "Introduction to Christianity" in English. The problem is that I do not have access to this book and I can't find it on-line in English. Since it is a direct quote I would prefer to use the same translation as that used in the book. Does anyone have access to this book or know the official translation for this quote.
TIA!
“Jesús no existe sino como Cristo y Cristo no existe sino en Jesús” (J. RATZINGER, Introducción al cristianismo, Salamanca 1976, p. 171).

Jesus does not exist except/but as Christ, and Christ does not exist except/but in Jesus.
The choice between "except" and "but" is a just stylistic one.

My apologies, Katherine. I did not read your explanation closely enough before I entered my translation. I do not have access to the original. (I looked for the original line using Yahoo search, to no avail.) All I can say is that this is a faithful translation, but whether it is identical to the passage in th English version of the Popes book I cannot guarantee.

This is a faithful translation of the *Spanish* "original" posted for translation in this forum. A translation closer to the original *German* would be 'In truth, Jesus exists only as the Christ, and the Christ exists no wise else/no otherwise/ but in Jesus' (sorry to wax Shakespearean on you, but "nicht anders" is as difficult to render into English as English double negatives are into Spanish). 'Exists only in Jesus' is the best colloquial, dynamic translation of the German, but, again, I do not have access to the English translation your looking for.

It occurs to me that a more dynamic translation of the German might be:
"In truth, Jesus exists only as the Christ, and the Christ exists in no other way but in Jesus."

: The English version, of course, is NOT the original. However, your translation is ok. But it should be "the Christ" with article, cf. the German original.
